Customizing email templates
Updated
ABC Digital Downloads sends your customers three emails. You can change what each one says and how it looks, turn any of them off, and translate them.
The three emails
In ABC, go to Settings. The Email templates section lists:
- Order Download Links: sent after a customer buys a digital product, with their download links.
- New file(s) added to order: sent when you add files to a customer's existing order and send the update from the order page.
- File Update Notification: sent to customers when a file they bought has been updated.
Each email shows Default until you change it, and Customized after that.

Edit an email
Available on the Professional and Plus plans (see Plans and billing).
- In Settings > Email templates, click Edit template on the email, or click anywhere on its row.
- In Edit the email subject, change the Subject. You can use variables in the subject too.
- Edit the email itself in the drag-and-drop editor: add and move blocks, and change the text and styling.
- To add details from the order, click copy next to a variable under Available variables, then paste it into the subject or the email. Keep every variable marked Required:
[downloadLinks]in Order Download Links and New file(s) added to order, and[downloadUrl]in File Update Notification. - Click Save.
ABC uses your saved version for every email of that kind from then on.

Turn an email off or on
Works on every plan.
- In Settings > Email templates, click Disable email on the email. ABC saves the change straight away; there's no confirmation.
- The email shows a Disabled badge, and its button changes to Enable email.
- To turn the email back on, click Enable email.
File Update Notification is the email that Replace sends when you tick Notify customers who have previously downloaded this file. The box decides: ticking it sends the email even if you've turned File Update Notification off here. To replace a file without emailing your customers, leave that box unticked. The box is off by default. See Replace a file and notify customers.

💡 Tip: If you turn off Order Download Links, customers can still get their files from the Thank you and Order status pages, if those options are on in Settings.
Restore the default
Available on the Professional and Plus plans.
⚠️ Important: Restoring the default deletes your changes to that email, and you can't get them back.
- On an email marked Customized, click Restore default template.
- Confirm.
Translate your emails
Available on the Professional and Plus plans.
- In Settings > Email templates, click Add language.
- In Add a language, choose the Language (there are 33) and enter a Name: the label you'll see in ABC.
- Click Add language.
- Choose the new language in Email language, then click Edit template on each email to translate it. A new language starts out in English, so you translate each email by hand.
A language's emails don't have Disable email or Restore default template. A translated email shows Translated. To go back to the default for one email, click Remove translation. To delete a whole language, choose it in Email language and click Remove language.
⚠️ Important: Remove translation deletes that email's translation, and Remove language deletes the language with all its translated emails. Customers who use that language then get your default emails.

Which language each customer gets
A new order's emails go out in the customer's Shopify language, if you've added that language. Customers in any other language get your default emails.
Change the email language for one order
You can send one order's emails in a different language. The option appears on the order's page once you've added a language.
- In ABC, go to Orders.
- Click the order.
- In the Customer card, next to Email language, click Change.
- In Change email language, select the language.
- Click Save.
ABC confirms "Email language updated".
Send emails from your own address
Available on the Professional and Plus plans.
To send these emails from an address on your own domain, see Setting up custom email settings (white-label emails).
