Setting up custom email settings (white-label emails)

Updated

By default, ABC Digital Downloads sends your customer emails from its own address. With a custom sender, they come from an address on your own domain instead, such as downloads@yourstore.com.

Available on the Professional and Plus plans (see Plans and billing).

You'll need access to your domain's DNS settings, wherever your domain is registered or hosted.

Step 1: Add your email address

  1. In your Shopify admin, open ABC Digital Downloads and go to Settings.
  2. Under Custom email settings, enter the address you want to send from in Email address, for example downloads@yourstore.com.
  3. Click Create.

ABC shows the address with the status Pending and lists the DNS records to add.

Step 2: Add the DNS records

ABC lists three CNAME records under Domain verification. Each one has a CNAME name and a Value, with buttons to copy them. These records let email providers check that the emails ABC sends for you really come from your domain (DKIM).

Next is the SPF record, which tells email providers that ABC is allowed to send emails for your domain:

  • If your domain has no SPF record yet, ABC shows an SPF TXT name and SPF TXT value. Add them as a new TXT record.
  • If your domain already has one, ABC shows "Existing SPF record found." Edit your existing SPF record to add include:amazonses.com. Don't create a second SPF record.

To add the records:

  1. Sign in to your DNS host and open the DNS settings for your domain.
  2. For each CNAME record in ABC, add a CNAME record with the same name and value.
  3. Add the SPF TXT record, or update your existing one.

💡 Tip: Some DNS hosts add your domain to the end of every record name for you. If yours does, enter only the part before your domain. For example, for a record named <token>._domainkey.yourstore.com, enter <token>._domainkey. Otherwise the record is saved as <token>._domainkey.yourstore.com.yourstore.com and won't verify.

Step 3: Wait for the status to change to Active

DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to take effect, depending on your DNS host.

  • While the status is Pending, click the Refresh icon to check again.
  • Once ABC has verified the records, the status changes to Active. From then on, all three of ABC's customer emails come from your address.
  • If the status shows Failed, compare each record at your DNS host with the values in ABC.

Remove your custom address

⚠️ Important: Removing your custom address can't be undone.

Click the Remove icon next to the status and confirm.

Troubleshooting

  • Still Pending after 48 hours: check each record at your DNS host with a lookup tool such as MXToolbox, and look for a doubled domain in the record names.
  • Two SPF records: a domain should have only one. Add include:amazonses.com to your existing SPF record instead of adding another.
  • Emails still come from ABC's address: check that the status is Active.
